garden design services
Andrea Newill Garden Design provides a creative, practical garden design service to suit your lifestyle and budget. Whether you are looking for a complete redesign of your whole garden, or just part of it, we can help. We can work with existing features or plants that you want to retain, or we can start from scratch. Once the design is drawn up, we can organise the construction and planting of your new garden. We will also ensure that you are equipped to look after the garden once we leave.
The initial consultation is essential in determining exactly what you want from your new garden. You might want to use it for entertaining, for relaxing, for children to play in, or for growing vegetables. Or a combination of all these and more! You may want a low maintenance garden or enjoy spending time looking after your plants. This is a no obligation meeting, usually organised following an initial telephone conversation with you. We will spend around an hour and a half together at your home, discussing your needs. i will also take you through the design process, so you understand what’s involved. We will establish how much you are comfortable spending on your new garden, which of course can be a significant investment. I can guide you on this based on many years experience so that you are presented with a design that is affordable.
From our discussion, the Garden Design Proposal will be drawn up. This includes the design brief and quotes for the design work to be undertaken.
Once you are happy with the Garden Design Proposal and have decided to proceed, I will organise a site survey of your garden. This gives me information on what the site is like now and what the growing conditions are. The existing garden and features within it are measured. This includes building outlines, individual trees, boundaries, services covers, changes in levels, paths, planting beds and steps. Photos and soil samples are also taken. Garden conditions are analysed. such as light levels, prevailing winds, frost pockets and good and bad views.
When a site is large and/or complex I will recommend a land survey company to carry out this stage of the process.
Design Presentation Plans
The first stage of the design process is The Master Plan. This is a scale plan drawing showing the new design for your garden. It includes all the new structural features and planting areas, as well as any existing features to be retained. Three dimensional visuals can also be produced to bring the plan to life. These can illustrate almost any view of the garden and can be so much easier to interpret than a plan drawing.
You will always be presented with a concept design initially. I will have discussed and agreed this draft design with you prior to presentation of the final Master Plan. Samples of proposed materials will be shown at this stage and cost options discussed.
Construction Detail Drawings
Construction drawings and specifications are produced to provide the detailed information for a landscape contractor to build your garden. This ensures that the garden is built exactly as you and the designer intended it to be. It also enable like for like quotes to be obtained from more than one landscaper, which can give you peace of mind that you are getting a fair price for the work.
The Planting Plan overlays the Master Plan, showing where each plant will be positioned in your new garden. Plants are chosen with great skill to suit the soil and situation that they will be planted in. Choices also take into account the amount of time you want to spend gardening. You will also receive an accompanying Plant Schedule listing all the plants, together with a colour image of each plant, making it easy for you to identify unfamiliar varieties.
It is essential that the build of your garden is carried out by a top quality landscape contractor. I am independent of specific landscapers, but regularly work with some excellent companies, usually local, whom I can recommend to you. These companies will work efficiently and with consideration and will give you a firm quote before starting work on constructing your garden. They are also used to working with professional garden design plans and will not make changes to the design unless requested by you or the designer.
You may choose to employ me to organise the tender process, helping you to select the right contractor for your project. Once appointed I can also Project Monitor the garden build, if you are too busy to oversee the work yourself. This service can include liaising between you and the landscape contractor, checking materials, measurements and build quality and resolving any issues that may arise during the build process, as well as organising a payments schedule.
Planting the garden is like colouring in a picture! Once the garden is built I can organise this next stage for you. Top quality plants are supplied at competitive prices, giving you the option of choosing larger specimens for instant impact or smaller plants that will give you an established garden a few years later. Follow up visits can be organised after planting to ensure that plants are healthy and growing well. This is a also great time for you to ask questions about any of the plants. These visits can continue at regular intervals to advise you as the garden develops.
You may also choose to source the plants and plant the garden yourself working from the Plant Schedule and Planting Plan provided. Of course that’s fine!
